Maggiore’s Big 10 Football Picks – Week # 3: YTD 5-4
After a two week hiatus from capping, I am back and ready to roll with this slate of Big Ten games. We are currently 5-4 on plays and 5-1 with our opinion picks. I hope to continue to have success moving forward to week 6.
Play of the Week
Ohio State (-3.5) over Nebraska
Don’t look at this as a homer pick. The Buckeyes may not be one of the top teams in the nation, but I do believe that they are the best team in the Big Ten. Ohio State went on the road and beat a good Michigan State team last week despite 3 turnovers. The Buckeyes can flat out run the ball and if recent history tells us anything it is that Nebraska has struggled stopping the run on the road. In the Huskers only trip away from Lincoln in 2012, UCLA put up 653 yards with 344 of those coming via the run. Last season in trips to Wisconsin and Michigan the Huskers gave up 231 rushing yards and 48 points to the Badgers and 238 yards and 45 points to the Wolverines. Buckeye quarterback Braxton Miller is a star and that will cause problems for the “Blackshirts”. Urban mania is sweeping Columbus so expect an extremely loud and rowdy crowd at the ‘Shoe tonight. I am making the Buckeyes a 2 unit play.
Penn State (-2.5) over Northwestern
I have to say that I was wrong about Penn State. They do lack depth, but they are very well coached and seem to be playing with a purpose. The Nittany Lions are a tipped pass against Ohio U and several missed kicks at Virginia away from being 5-0. PSU has covered the line in 4 straight while the Northwestern Wildcats are perfect on the board and perfect against the number at 5-0. I believe the line finally catches up to Northwestern this week. The Wildcats have not been away from home since week 1 and despite everything going on at Penn State, Beaver Stadium is a tough place to play. The Nittany Lions have a bye week coming up, so I expect a very focused team on Saturday afternoon. Northwestern comes in 9th nationally in rushing per game, Penn State has only allowed 2 rushing TD’s all season. I feel the Penn State defense gets it done. I will take the home field advantage and put 1 unit on PSU.
Purdue (+3) over Michigan
While I have changed my opinion about Penn State, I haven’t about Michigan. I feel that Michigan is truly a one horse pony. If you can slow down Denard Robinson, you have a very good shot at beating the Wolverines. Even though Purdue gave up 41 points to Marshall last week, the Boilers can play some defense. I look for Kawann Short and company to neutralize Robinson and do enough to win the game at home. Purdue for 1 unit.
Opinions: 5-1 YTD
Indiana-Michigan State over 48
Michigan-Purdue under 58
