Big 10 picks - Purdue's Kawann Short

Purdue’s Kawann Short

Play of the Week

Purdue +14 over ND

The Fighting Irish got the attention of the country last week with a huge win over Navy. Purdue is on a different level than the Middies. The Boilermakers have size, experience, and talent on the defensive line. In last week’s win Notre Dame was able to run for 293 yards on 6.4 yards per carry. The Irish will find the sledding a lot tougher against DT Kawann Short and company. Purdue will force freshman quarterback Everett Golson to make some plays on the ground and through the air. On offense, Purdue is healthy and will be able to score on the Notre Dame defense. This is a 2 unit play as long as the line stays at +14 or better. If by kickoff the spread goes to 13.5 or less, this game will get 1 unit of action from me.

Other Plays

Wisconsin -7 over Oregon State

In week one Wisconsin did not look much like a Top 10 team as they only put 26 points on the board against FCS team Northern Iowa. The Badgers only managed 3.6 yards per carry and it took preseason Heisman contender Montee Ball 32 carries to churn out 120 yards. So why lay a touchdown on the road? Wisconsin is a much better team than the one that played last week. Transfer quarterback Danny O’Brien was efficient in his debut throwing for 219 and the TD’s on 19/23 passing. Wisconsin did control the ball for almost 40 minutes but had to settle for Field Goals on a couple of red zone trips. I look for the Badgers to finish those drives with touchdowns this week in Corvallis. The Beavers struggled mightily against good running teams last year and having their week one game against Nicholls State cancelled last week will not help. Opening a season against a physical Wisconsin team is not the best recipe to pull an upset. At -7 or worse the Badgers will be a 1 unit play. If the line passes the key number and drops to -6.5 or better, I will bump this up to a 2 unit play.

Air Force +21.5 over Michigan

Let’s call this a hangover game for the Wolverines. Michigan spent all offseason getting ready for their much hyped matchup with the defending champions, Alabama.  The result was a 41-14 thrashing from the Crimson Tide. Now here come the Falcons and a traditional running game that is very hard to prepare for. Alabama was able to run for 232 yards against a very inexperienced Wolverine defensive front in week one. With little time to prepare for the option attack of Air Force, Michigan will struggle to stop the run again this week. Denard Robinson and the Michigan offense will be able to score on the Falcons, but Air Force’s ability to sustain drives and run time off the clock will keep this game within the 3 touchdown number. This is a 1 unit play.
