Canucks/Blue Jackets:

Today we have a battle between two offensively challenged teams. The Columbus blue Jackets have managed to average 37.2 shots per game in their last five, but are averaging below two goals per game in that stretch. The Vancouver Canucks are currently in a five game losing streak where they have only scored a total of eight goals.

This will be CBJs last game before their bye week, and I expect them to be motivated coming off a loss in Buffalo last night. Tortorella has stressed getting the puck inside. This means that the Blue Jackets are trying to avoid a perimeter game, which means more shots and more offensive schemes.

The Canucks have struggled on defense just as much as they have with offense, and they are not a puck possession team. They also held a full practice at Nationwide Arena last night, while the Jackets were playing their game in Buffalo.

I expect this to be a back and forth game, with both teams having an offensive game plan. Both offense cores have been depleted in the past few weeks, but are slowly but surely getting their troops back.

Flames/Panthers:

I had my eyes set on this matchup while the Flames and Lightning were playing last night. Calgary will be riding off the high of blowing out the best team in hockey. It is natural to subconsciously feel like you are on house money after a win like that, especially when having to face a non contender the next night. Unfortunately for them, the Florida Panthers are no slouch at home. They receive favor in these type of games with good reason.

I expect Florida to be at their best today, and when they are, they are as good as almost any team. This should be a high octane game in Florida’s favor with their arena conditions.

Oilers/Coyotes:

There is not much to say about this one, besides my opinion that this game will set the tone for the Oilers slim chances of amounting to anything this season. Edmonton has had a hard time scoring, despite doing all the right things. However, if they cannot beat the worst team in the NHL off a bye week with really not a whole lot to play for, then that says a lot about the character of the Oilers.
