Sharks/Capitals:

The San Jose Sharks will conclude a four game Eastern road trip in the Nation’s Capital today as they face Washington before having the next couple of days off.

The Capitals have been a little unpredictable this season in comparison to last year’s consistency. They have showed flashes of last season’s defensive brilliance, and they have also had stretches like the last three which resulted in high scoring games. One thing that has remained consistent under Barry Trotz’s reign is that Washington has yet to beat the Sharks ever since Pete Deboer took over them. If you look back to the early 2010s, Deboer has always appeared to have a matchup advantage over Trotz.

While Washington continues to be a solid team at home, the Sharks also continue to be a solid team on the road. Coaching has a huge influence in the splits involving these two, and there are good cases to be made for both sides.

However, there is one standout feature of this Deboer coached team this season that I just cannot ignore.

The Sharks have allowed 5 goals in a game five times this season. Saturday’s game in Tampa was the fifth. Of the previous four, the Sharks rebounded in three of them with wins. All four defensive rebound opportunities succeeded, as all four follow up game stayed under six goals. The last two were Sharks shut outs.

There is no secret that Deboer is fueled by blowout losses, and defensive incompetence is a major embarrassment in his eyes. With the Sharks being alert on all aspects coming into tonight, I would usually bank on a Sharks win…However, I am wary of Washington’s potential dominance at home. Barry Trotz is also typically a defensive coach, and I expect them to be playing on the pace of Sharks hockey tonight. Phil Grubauer’s numbers are nothing to swoon over, but the 3.49 GAA is more so a reflection of two blowout losses than it was his actual average performance.

I expect this to be a neutral zone game.
