NHL season Saturday Edge YTD (1-1  -0.90 units)

Bruins/Maple Leafs:

In one of the most intense and longest standing rivalries, the Toronto Maple Leafs will host the Boston Bruins in game one of a home and home over the next two nights. Both teams come in with likely similar mindsets, so don’t expect either club to hold back coming into their first meeting of the season.

I have been following the Maple Leafs quite closely this year, and it is obvious that the team thrives on offense. Even in their last game, where defense appeared to be the priority, the Leafs were still able to score four goals en route to a 4-2 final which resulted in a push on the total…and this is without Auston Matthews. Today, the Leafs will be a little more emotion driven and less defense focused. In essence, even when Toronto is focused on defense, they still leave a lot of open lanes. Boston will rely on their top line of Marchand, Bergeron, and Pastrnak to spark the offense and also draw penalties. Expect a lot of fireworks from this top unit of the Bruins.

Likewise, long gone are the days where the Bruins would fall back on defense and goaltending to win games. The Bruins have become a very erratic team over the past couple of years, as they seem to be a trigger happy team under Bruce Cassidy. While the Leafs continue to be without their spark plug on offense Auston Matthews, they still operate on a very persistent offense which contains a lot of dead shooters and passing schemes. It won’t take long for emotions to kick in, and penalties to occur. If not for the absence of Matthews, this line is probably 6.5. Let’s take advantage of two teams who will likely be out to kill each other this weekend.
